Vietnam Veterans of America: Liz Trotta 'owes the men and women of our military and veterans an apology, and FOX should demand it of her'

Vietnam Veterans of America Enraged by FOX Network Liz Trotta's
Commentary On Sexual Assault in the Military

"Vietnam Veterans of America is enraged by the comments of FOX Network's Liz Trotta, who, in a February 12 edition of America's News HQ,, challenged the Pentagon for its increased spending on programs for victims of sexual assault," said John Rowan, VVA National President. In response to a DoD report showing a 64 percent increase in violent sexual assaults since 2006, Trotta remarked, "Well, what did they expect? These people are in close contact."...

...Said Rowan, "Ms. Trotta's despicable commentary has sent a shock wave through the ranks of our membership and beyond. No institution in America condones the disgrace of sexual assault. It is not accepted in corporate America, nor is it on the streets of our towns and communities. Why should sexual assault in the military be anything less than criminal? As the Department of Defense grapples with the problem, it must take responsibility at all levels of command, and leadership must be held accountable."

"As veterans who fought to uphold our Constitution, we hold sacred all the rights it insures, said Rowan. "As such, we are appalled that Ms. Trotta would use the Fourth Estate as a vehicle to condone the criminal acts of some by contending that sexual assault in the military is 'expected' behavior. It is a disgrace that FOX would stand behind this type of commentary. Ms. Trotta owes the men and women of our military and those in the veterans' ranks an apology, and VVA believes FOX should demand it of her."

Hat tip to Ellen at NewsHounds, who notes:

You can demand an apology from Fox News, too, by contacting the show at newshq@foxnews.com or comments@foxnews.com or by tweeting them at @ANHQDC. They’ve also got a Facebook page.

I do not understand why anybody in our military votes Republican...

Republicans consistently vote against veteran health care and treatment, Republicans have used lies and politics to put our military into harm's way, and military veterans are typically some of the lowest-income and most vulnerable in our society...and only the Democratic policies try to help them.

And then there's hateful rhetoric like this coming from Fox 'News'...

You hit the "nail on the head" redsfan. That's why I'm mystified why ANY veteran or active duty servicemember would vote or support the GOP. They haven't done a damn thing to support our men and women in uniform or veterans transitioning back to civilian life. Even war veterans in the GOP like John McCain voted against the post 9/11 GI bill that is helping thousands of veterans. How collectively stupid are we as Americans?

Exactly...it's time to put an end to the false narrative that Republicans are "pro-military"...because they are NOT. They are pro-war...they are pro-war-profiteers....but they do nothing, in word or deed, that actually helps the men and women who serve in our military forces.

I don't want an apology from this woman. I want her to keep talking, and to keep broadcasting her stupidity and her unbelievably warped view of reality.

Our elections are almost always decided by the political center. I believe - and this is only my opinion - that the center has no choice but to vote for President Obama. The Republicans are just too crazy.

What may happen if these nuts continue to spew their hatred is that those who are generally to the right of moderate conservatives may recognize that Republicans cannot be allowed control of this country. Perhaps the right-wing propaganda broadcast machine may even take a hit.

In the meantime, we must mobilize and work to get not only President Obama re-elected, but to make sure the down-ticket Democratic candidates win. We veterans spent time defending the country in uniform. We can still defend the country by simply going to the voting booth and making sure these totalitarians are crushed.

I sent this in just a short time ago:

To "The Powers That Be" at Fox News,

I am in complete agreement with John Rowan, National President of the Vietnam Veterans of America, who has condemned in no uncertain terms the flippant and grossly insensitive remarks made by Fox News commentator Liz Trotta regarding the issue of sexual assault within the Armed Forces of the United States.

You have done our men and women in uniform a great disservice.

Fox News fancies itself as the news outlet of choice for all patriotic Americans, and your organization quite obviously has no compunctions at all about wrapping itself in the flag in its attempts to shape public opinion and to discredit the current administration. Your biggest problem, ladies and gentlemen, is that you don't know when to rein it in. The cavalier attitude of your roster of 'personalities' is generally unpleasant, to be sure, but Fox News and Liz Trotta have crossed the line on this one.

Where do you draw the line? Do you even have a line somewhere out there in the conservative ionosphere, or do you fail to grasp the meaning of the word "boundaries"? How about that quaint old notion of "professional integrity"?

Ms. Trotta should be required to retract her statement immediately and without equivocation, and she should further be required to make an on-air apology to all American veterans and to all members of the military who currently serve our nation with dignity, with honor, and with great pride.

I'm howling into a wind tunnel, I would imagine, but enough of these kinds of protests, in conjunction with a conscientiously applied national boycott of Fox News by former and current service personnel and concerned citizens, should get their attention - and get it right quick, as "The Man with No Name" might say.

Fox is 0 for 2 the past week when this stupid statement is combined with the equally idiotic "crack pipe" statement directed at Rep. Maxine Waters.

One of my great regrets about my Operation Iraqi Freedom service is that there was a sexual assault during our overnight shift. Thankfully the punk that committed this despicable act was caught, ( I also regret not being involved in his capture ), and I of course would have far preferred that he never got the chance to commit his crime (which she did make easier by ignoring night time safety procedures, which of course doesn't excuse this loser of a "soldier" in the least) !!

Sexual assault should not, is not, and will not be tolerated by the U.S. Military, which is exactly how it should be. Any statement that implies anything but the strongest desire of military leaders and the overwhelming majority of all Service Members to prevent ALL military sexual assaults is a wrong answer. Just as the Rep. Waters statement was so over the top it should have resulted in the immediate suspension or termination of the personality responsible, this statement demands action from Fox execs, which I would wait for, but I need my sleep !!

Heres my take on sexual assaults in the military... Young men for the most part are grossly immature.

Most Americans males under the age of 30 have been raised on a diet of " you can do anything you want "." your so special"
"you don't have to do that if you don't want too". And the all time worest..." you deserve anything you want"

So sexual assault in the military probably will get worse before it gets better. The children of the US have been given far more then they need. While not being deserving of all they have received. The become resentful of not having everything..

I think the parents or parent of these children tried to shield them from life. So they would be hurt by life's harshness. Anyone can see that's not going to work out...

This is agreeably the worest symptom of this generation but by far not the only negative one.

I would say that if you commit rape you have to have a couple screws loose. Lack of discipline has nothing to do with something that revolting.

In my opinion, the Baby Boomers were the most coddled generation of all time and our country and young people are paying for it right now.

If there is a higher incidence of rape among this generation I do not believe it is because they have had what want when they want it ( though that is often true) I would wager that psychologically it is because they often got those things instead of love, instead of proper familial connection and family time. They didn't learn empathy.

The rape crime rate has been dropping. You can probably thank DNA and other forensics more than anything else. To parallel rape today with how children are raised today does not compute based on stats.

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the adjusted per-capita victimization rate of rape has declined from about 2.4 per 1000 people (age 12 and above) in 1980 to about 0.4 per 1000 people, a decline of about 85%

It's not surprising to me at all if its gone up in the last decade in the military. Sending soldiers time after time into a traumatic atmosphere has very harmful mental side effects.

I suspect the evangelical hold over the military now doesn't help. I was never harassed or attacked during my years in the service but my daughter had already experienced too many incidents before she was even in for 6 months after she joined in this last decade.

Funny, nothing happened to Trotta while she was overseas covering the war. Man she must have been too scary to jump on. I guess it only happens to military women.

There are some men in the military that just don't care to have a woman cover their back, so they uncover hers. They must pay. Government property.

Times are changing, and unless everyone wants to go back to the Draft, anyone who passes the test should get an opportunity to serve our country. The Military should and does prosecute those who don't obey their laws.

Sexual assault in the military will continue as long as the senior corps allows it to continue.

Since we now have a volunteer military, when senior officers demand of their junior officers and senior NCOs that this @!$%# stop - it will! The military reacts (at least the Navy I knew) to a demand to get "shipshape".

I am not so naive to believe 100% of sexual assaults will stop, but will be significantly less frequent when it is demanded to become significantly less frequent and more than the simple lip service it is getting currently.

Yup

"... Since we now have a volunteer military, when senior officers demand of their junior officers and senior NCOs that this @!$%# stop - it will!..."

They did aggressively address race relations basically in this manner along with "education" on the subject. The final tagline on any person on person assault in the service should be - were all "green"! - on the same team. You don't want to be on a "homogenous" team then get out. Much of the same logic displayed by Trotta's remark, "Well, what did they expect? These people are in close contact." is exactly the same negative angle that was spewed forth concerning race relations 40 years ago.

No, real men would've supported you as true warriors do and would've blow his butt away.

One of the great things about the TV set is that you can change the channels or turn it off or never turn it on. Anything involving Fox has either been muted or deleted or turned off at my house and will remain so which is probably why I am usually not aware of their asinine actions and words.

The future of Trotta, in the eyes of the folks in the military, has just ended and I can foresee when some military person will actually take some sort of action against her - hopefully not physical - but it needs to be done.

IMHO, Trotta spewed this hate, not out of her believing this or even thinking about what she was saying, but just a/o only for the shock value.

I have come to my own conclusion that this is how the whole of Faux News works. They work to shock and disgust, amuse and insult, to keep their name in the forefront of the media.

I think the whole of Faux, the TParty and their minions should be completely ignored, met with derision, and dismissed with sarcastic humor.

Faux should never be the topic of any intelligent discourse, it would be an oxymoron of the highest order.

The Fox modus operandi is to bring on commentators as proxies, who make outrageous, untrue claims on important political issues in order to push their rabid right-wing agenda.

Then, if anyone calls them out on it, Fox just says hey, we didn't say it, that person doesn't work for us. In the meantime, Fox management is high-fiving themselves in the back room.

I was assaulted while overseas. I was assigned to a post that had two other women who lived off post. Being the only female I was in a building on the 5th floor alone. After the assault was found out by the other men they tore the rapist up. After they beat his butt they drug him to where the mps were and handed him over. He was a E7 I was a E3. He lost his rank, went to prision in Leavenworth and then got a dishonorable discharge. He had 19 years in when it happened.

What is wrong with the Republican party? All the controversy over Fox News, and not a Republican soul is seeing anything wrong with it. Even defending it !!!

Had a friend who I used to occasionally visit at his (self-employed) work place and he would listen to Limbaugh every day while he worked, I couldn't help but smile, he's not even a good liar! The people who listen to that must think they live in the Merry Ol' Land of OZ because someone badly needs a reality check!

Rush Limbaugh...I couldn't stand him from the first day he came on the radio. I heard him, or rather was forced to listen to him (I was in a vehicle with 3 men on our way to an oil spill response and they thought he was hilarious) when he first got his own show. That stupid music and his de, de, delet or whatever it was just made my teeth ache like the reaction to the sound of nails on a chalkboard.

What makes me mad as hell is that it is the republicans who wave the flag and are all to willing today to send our service members off to war. Then tell us how much they love us as long as they do not have to serve there country.

The Obama administration like them or not have done more to support our troops than was ever done in the last administration.

They have outraged the military, they have outraged women in general and wanting to start taking away our rights, they have insulted people of color. It seems they have not a clue how that will go against them at the voting booth.

Fox should of fired her a!! but I knew they would not. What scares me is these people vote and have no clue. You can not fix ignorant.

BTW Thanks to all of you who served their country.

It seems to be that everyone is so concerned about this idiot's comments. How about the facts in this matter? A 64% increase in violent sexual assaults?! That is absolutely outrageous and the military should be ashamed for letting it get to this point. The big problem with recruiting a military force to fight 2 wars is that you tend to accept people into the service who otherwise would be of questionable character. This falls squarely on the shoulders of the junior officers and NCOs for allowing this type of thing to happen. I've seen it myself. Everyone is so worried about their own careers and looking up at that next promotion, that they forget to look to the troops under their command and the welfare of their unit.

I served as a company commander. Although I had previously served as an infantry officer on active duty, with the reduction in force in the 1990s, I found myself assigned to a Reserve MP unit. One of the first things I did was conduct a command climate survey. This is completed by all members of the unit to help me in getting an idea of where they were as far as training, discipline, leadership, etc. Although everything seemed fine on the surface, as I made my rounds, checking with my different platoons and their work spaces, I soon found out that everything was not as fine as it appeared. This was my first experience with female soldiers under my command, since they do not serve in the infantry. This military police company was made up of approximately 30% female soldiers. What I found, as I began reading the surveys was disturbing. Many of the females (identified only by gender - this is an annonymous survey) were reporting that they had either experienced inappropriate sexual comments or advances and that there was sexually explicit material that they had seen.

With that information in hand, I conducted a thorough search of all work areas, lockers and offices and discovered that one of the platoons had a huge collection of pornographic videos, magazines and posters stashed away. I immediately put an end to it, and reported it to my battalion commander, who unfortunately was too worried about his own career to take any steps himself, explaining that it was my problems, that I needed to take care of it and he didn't want to hear anything more on the subject. I handled it and life moved on.

On the flip side of that situation, was another unsettling incident. About a year after I had taken command, we received a warning order that we may be deployed to Kosovo. I issued the information to the company. Within two months, I had a dozen of my female troops reporting to me that they were pregnant and therefore non-deployable. I found this a little disturbing since only two of them were married and only another 2 or 3 were in any kind of long term relationship. The end result was the most telling. Once we received word to stand down and that we would not be deploying, only 4 of the 12 women who had become pregnant carried the pregnancy through. The others all opted for abortions. It was disturbing to think that people would do something like that to avoide deployment. I know someone will accuse me of being insensitive to women's rights or something. I really didn't care what they did in their personal lives. I just found it disturbing the lengths they would go to so as not to be deployed. It just speaks to the fact that things cut both ways sometimes, and that its not always the men who step out of line.

As far as this Fox contributor....she's an idiot. Period.

I had a similar incident thoough I was only an E-4 at the time. During the early stages of Desert Storm ('90 timeframe) we received word we might deploy. 5 women (including me) and 12 men. 4 women became pregnant; none were married (no I wasn't one of the four). They did all go through with the pregnancies, two sent their babies for adoption, two others later married.

I have to say I prefer, most of the time, to work with men even with their oftentimes, uhm, "colorful" language and references. Some of the women I have had to work with, for, and over are and were migraines in the making with their whining and complaining when they are sent to do something. It makes those of us who aren't afraid to carry, or help carry, the load look bad and it ticks me off as much as it does any males in the vicinity.

I am one to usually defend Fox at times as they do report on some issues which other outlets completely ignore but this time I am ready to pull the plug if they don't get Trotta to make some sort of retraction. Granted, the normal language "[We} don't necesarily share the views of our contributors/commentators" may be the response but one can only hope Trotta got or will be getting an earful to watch what she says. But again, she is a contributor and they can't restrict her speech. What they CAN do is not use her as a contributor anymore but I doubt that will happen. After all, I thought they had sunk extra low when they brought Palin onboard.

Lynn,

Thanks for your service and thanks for commenting. I was getting a little concerned that everyone wants to talk about the talking head's comment and not the alarming substance of the story!

What ever happened to the 5-7 second delay in a telecast and the mute button ? How does Fox network even allow that comment on the air ?

Freedom of speech. What she said was based upon her own perception of things.
